The name of our project is the Xhosa phrase ‘Pusha Panda Bophelo’. It loosely means to push for change. Our project therefore focuses on pushing the South African healthcare system towards reform and change to ensure that transgender and gender diverse persons are able to get access to gender affirming healthcare on the basis of gender self-determination. This includes advocating for changes in national and provincial healthcare policy to enable equitable and decentralised access; promoting equitable budgeting for transgender healthcare; and shifting mental models to reduce and eliminate prejudice and biases held about trans and gender diverse persons in the chain of service delivery. To this extent, Gender Dynamix uses research, policy advocacy, capacity strengthening; human rights documentation and monitoring (REACT); and the development of digital tools such as a digital healthcare app called L.I.R.A. (Linkages, Information, and Referrals App) as key approaches to drive its change agenda.
